Brack says e-mail newsletters are keys
to building support
(Nov.
1, 2002, AP) -- Politicalweb.info found that in races for
governor, House and Senate, 72 percent of Democratic candidates
and 81 percent of Republicans have Web sites. Among congressional
candidates, two-thirds have volunteer sign-up features and
a third offer e-mail newsletters.
"E-mail
newsletters can keep supporters interested over long periods
of time," said Andy Brack, a communications strategist
in Charleston, S.C., who lost a 2000 congressional bid. "Somebody
who gets a newsletter for a year damn sure will vote for you
and will tell friends."
Campaigns
have also used e-mail to encourage supporters to attend events,
write letters to newspaper editors and even donate money or
time.
Charlie
Smith, a Democratic state House candidate in Charleston, had
a 10,000- piece postal mailing to get out one day and solicited
help by e-mail. Within 24 hours, 35 people had shown up to
pitch in.
